Udupi, 5/12/2005
GYAN – 2005, this science fest combining science exhibitions and inter-school and college competitions held only a few days ago was just a dream, a concept, put forward by a few enthusiastic science students. This seed of an idea has grown and taken its present form. The basic principle behind organizing Gyan - 2005 is to spread knowledge far and wide. True to this principle is our logo, a lamp, which though small when compared to a sun, is spreading light to distant corners with the help of a long flame and our slogan “na hi jnanena sadrusham iha vidhyate” literally means that there is nothing in this world that can be compared to knowledge and believe me when I say, we are the true believers of this slogan.
Gyan 2005 was flagged off to a very good start by the ever-dynamic personalities, Dr. H. Shantaram, Administrative Officer of The Academy of General Education and Sri K. Panduranga Gore, Retd. Teacher and President, Rotary, Udupi on 1st of December 2005. The two eminent guests then visited the exhibitions in the departments of Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Home Science, Computer Science and the exhibition of stamps collected by Mr. Vishwesh, a second year degree student. The first day of the exhibition saw quite a sizeable crowd of visitors, which included a good number of school children. The children were quite fascinated by all that they saw and were hopefully inspired to pursue science as a subject of their higher education. A glance at the visitor’s book maintained in each department showed that the visitors appreciated very much the detailed and colourful explanations given to the exhibits by our enthusiastic band of volunteers. About 500 people visited the exhibition on the very first day. The science model making competition or Replica for high schools and college students was also a part of Day one of Gyan 2005. Nineteen teams from various high schools (Dandathirtha English Medium High school, Kaup; Milagres High school, Kalliyanpur; Govt. High school, Volakadu; Govt. PU College, Hebri; T. A. Pai English Medium High school, Kunjebettu; MPUC, Manipal; Sri Vishnu Moorthy High school, Kudi; V. K. R. Acharya Memorial High school, Kunjal; St. Lawrence PU College, Moodubelle) and 12 teams from various colleges (SVS College, Bantwal; MGM College, Udupi; MGM PU College, Udupi; Vijaya College, Mulki; Alva’s College, Moodabidri; Milagres College, Kallianpura; Milagres PU College, Kallianapura; Poornaprajna College, Udupi; St. Agnes College, Mangalore;) took part in Replica. The creativity and innovation of the participants was apparent in models like Ray scope, Hand pump, HIV virus, Crude oil extraction and thus, the Prof. U. L. Acharya Memorial prize for Replica was fiercely contested for.
Day two of Gyan 2005 saw even larger crowds of visitors, nearly 3000 people at the exhibitions in various departments. Day 2 was the day of inter-collegiate competitions. The competitions conducted were quiz or Quick silver, collage or Amalgamation, crossword puzzle or Crossfire and spot drawing of Einstein’s portrait or jumpstART. Almost 150 college students from 18 colleges (MGM College, Udupi; Milagres College, Kallianpura; Milagres PU College, Kallianapura; Vijaya College, Mulki; Alva’s College, Moodabidri; Canara College, Mangalore; Govinda Das PU College, Suratkal; SVS College, Bantwal; Vidyaniketan College, Kaup; St. Aloysius College, Mangalore; Poornaprajna PU College, Udupi; MGM PU College, Udupi; Poornaprajna College, Udupi; Shree Bhuvanendra PU College, Karkala; St. Agnes College, Mangalore; Christian PU College, Udupi; Manipal Junior College, Manipal; and Govt. OVER ALL TROPHY- GYAN- 2005
ALVA’S COLLEGE, Moodbidri.
The celebrations of Gyan – 2005 were concluded on 3rd December, 2005 with the valedictory address by Sri K. K. Pai, the Registrar, Academy of General education, Manipal. He opined that conducting such competitions and exhibitions for the students is better than holding lectures/seminars and that here, every one learns by associating with each other. He patted the backs of the organizers of Gyan – 2005 for starting a Science fest in a unique way and gave a call to continue the same in the years to come. He also cautioned that it should not be the mere repetition of the past and there should be something new every year. He assured us of financial help from the Management if the Management is convinced that the programme is going to help the neighbouring schools and the society. Miss Kripa, a student of Sri Vishnu Moorthy High school, Kudi, Mr. Satyaraj, a student of T. A. Pai English Medium High school, Kunjebettu; Sri Seetharam Mehandale, Headmaster, U. Kamala Bai High school, Kadiyali and Sri Dinesh Shettigar, Lecturer, Govt. PU College, Hebri expressed their opinions about the different programmes conducted under Gyan 2005 celebrations. Dr. G. K. Bhat, Professor and Head of Zoology Department read the report pertaining to Gyan – 2005. Smt. Suvarna Hebbar, Head of the department of Home Science and Dr. P.K.Rajgopal, Head of the Department of Botany spoke on this occasion. Prof. M.L.Samaga, Principal of MGM College who chaired the valedictory function thanked all the Heads of the Science Departments and students for their active involvement in conducting the exhibitions and also felt that this type of programmes is necessary to get the school children to our college campus and to show the infra structure that we have in the different science departments. Prof. Padmavathi Badakillaya, Principal of MGM PU College was present on the dais.
The objective of the Science Club of MGM College is to attract more and more students of the schools and high schools to the field of science. We want to catch them now under the slogan ‘catch them young’. We are making all efforts with regard to this. We have already started SEEP (Science Education Extension Programme), a programme of taking science from college to schools, under which, our students from second year degree have already delivered a series of discussion oriented lectures on science in the neighbouring schools in the last mid term vacation. This has gained a good momentum and we have received invitations for more and more such classes. Udupi-Manipal Rotary has been consulted in this regard. The Science Club also has the idea of conducting workshops for High school teachers. One workshop was already conducted by our teachers on Physics and Chemistry on the 25th and 26th of November 2005. Another workshop on Biology will be conducted next year. We also have the intention of conducting training programmes for science teachers of primary schools and high schools on “how to prepare the students for Children Science Congress” in the years to come. The science departments of our college are conducting number of programmes to inculcate competitive spirit amongst our students. The only motto of our Science Club is to promote Science, Science, Science… everywhere… every time…. every way…………The lamp will go on spreading its light to the four corners of the world.
